What is ECO Funding and Why Are These Grants FREE?

This is a very good question. ECO Funding is a Government led scheme that stands for Energy Company Obligation. The Government have instructed the BIG 6 Energy companies like British Gas, EON, SSE, NPower, EDF and Scottish Power to reduce carbon emissions by funding home energy improvements such as internal wall insulation, first time heating with new radiators and boilers, loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, room in roof insulation, underfloor insulation, smart controls such as HIVE or NEST and highly efficient storage heaters to name a few.

Does everyone qualify for ECO 4 grant?

The benefits that mean you are eligible for the ECO4 scheme are:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income based Jobseekers allowance
  • Income related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Housing Benefit
  • Tax Credits (Child or Working Tax Credit)

If you don’t claim any of the benefits above you could also qualify for funding through your council’s ECO4 Flex rules. These rules allow households to apply if they don’t claim benefits and earn under £31,000 per year or have a health condition made worse by living in a cold home or are vulnerable to the effects of living in a cold home.

Energy performance rules

To qualify under ECO4 your property must have an EPC rating of D, E, F or G. Energy companies can only spend 15% of their funding on Band D properties and because of this applications are only being accepted for properties with an E, F or G rating.

If your property has an EPC rating of A-C you do not qualify, as in order to get this rating your property will already be well insulated and adequately heated.

All existing EPCs can be viewed on the government’s Energy Performance Certificate register (England and Wales) or the Scottish Energy Performance register (Scotland).

If you don’t currently have an EPC a Registered Installer can estimate the rating when you apply and they’ll produce an EPC for you if the application is successful.

The second way to qualify is by being in fuel poverty

This is by spending 10% approximately or more of your annual income on heating your home. You may be finding it difficult to heat your home and to makes ends meet – like a lot of us. If you live in a home that is expensive to heat and you have a low income then you are likely to pass for the scheme and the Local Authority Flexible Eligibility route. The LA flexible eligibility route is for people not on any Government benefits or credits but for those that have high heating costs and low incomes (all incomes are set differently by different Local Authorities). Again, this may sound too good to be true but please ring your Council and ask them about the scheme – they will tell you or transfer you to the right people and then come back to us. It is best to check with our team by phoning us on 0333 004 0035 and asking for some advice on these set figures. Here is a list of the Local Authorities that we can help you qualify with:

England – Wirral, Lichfield, Tewkesbury, Cheshire West, Bradford, Torbay, Cheshire East, Dorset, Shropshire, Forest of Dean, Chester, Chesterfield, Mendip, South Staffordshire, Stroud, Derby City, Eastbourne, North Somerset, Stafford Borough, Cotswolds, Stafford, Derbyshire Dales, East Sussex, South Somerset, Tamworth, South Glos, Solihull, Dudley, Hastings, Swindon, Portsmouth, Nottingham, Earewash, Lewes, Wiltshire, Gosport, Rushcliffe, Mid Devon, High Peak, Rother, South Hams, Bristol, Leeds, Wealden, Herefordshire, West Devon, Leicesterhsire, Amber Valley, North East Derbyshire, Cheltenham, Gloucester, North Devon, Bolsover, Cornwall, South Derbyshire.

Wales – Flintshire, Carmarthnshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigioan, Rhonddfa Cynon Taff, Blaenau Gwent, Swansea, Anglesey and Gwynedd (through a partner installer).

What kind of insulation will a grant cover?

The grants are very generous for the properties that qualify and the grants can include:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Boiler Upgrades (non-condensing boilers and for homeowners only)
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Electric storage heaters (homeowners only)
  • First time central heating (providing there was a gas connection prior to 31 March 2022)
  • Internal wall insulation
  • Loft insulation
  • Room in roof insulation for a loft that has been converted into a room

You may be offered enough to fund the entire cost of improving insulation or installing other measures. However, some people receive only some of the money and need to contribute the remaining amount.

Wrap Your House In a Blanket!

Internal wall insulation is like wrapping your home in a blanket! Or, another analogy would be this – imagine 2 tea pots, one with a tea cosy on it and the other without. Which one would go cold first?! You know the answer right. Well, picture your home as the tea pot. Internal wall insulation will retain heat in your home just like that tea cosy would, keeping your home warmer for longer when you put your boiler or heater on. Insulating your solid walls will cut your heating costs considerably.  There is very little disruption as the workers are highly skilled and always take good care when working inside anyone’s premises. The typical installation time will vary. If you live in  a larger house, let us say 5 bedrooms, then the work can take up to 10 days. If you live in a small flat then it will take approximately 3 days maximum.  Solid wall insulation may be suitable for a variety of property types such as brick, stone, steel-framed and concrete construction. Internal solid wall insulation works by adding a thermal layer of material to the existing wall – see the video right here. The benefits of internal wall insulation are:

  • Heat retention within the home
  • 25 year guarantee attached to the product.
  • Make your home a much warmer place to live – a more comfortable environment for your family.
  • Reduce the heating bills considerably.
  • Increase the value of your home
  • Paying for it privately would cost thousands but this is 100% FREE
  • Increase the energy efficiency of the home and a certificate that is attached to it called and EPC (see the www.epcregister.com or ask one of our members of staff for more details)
  • If you are a Landlord then it will make your rental property to a standard that can be let out legally.

All contractors are highly skilled, professional and vetted to the highest standard. All workers are checked for criminal records.

Cut Your Electricity Heating Bills In Half

FREE HHR or high heat retention storage heaters are far more energy efficient than the old type of heaters that existed some years ago! Their high heat retention properties allows them to retain more heat for longer. They work by using the economy 7 tariff that uses the low rate of kwh per pence between 1am – 7am in the morning. So when we are sleeping they are charging up or storing the heat in the special bricks inside of them. The bricks store the heat and release it throughout the day gradually. They have LED setting and are much better looking than the old type heaters. Your current energy provider e.g. EON will install a new second meter for you that is a dual tariff or economy 7. This will tap into the cheaper rate of electricity for the HHR storage heaters to to work off. There are 3 different strength heaters HHR20, HHR30 and the HHR40 – all very expensive to buy privately but FREE under the scheme with Stellar Energy. So what are the benefits of having HHR storage heaters over normal plug in electic heaters?

  • Cut your heating bills considerably
  • Make the home warmer and a more comfortable place to live
  • Slimline and more modern
  • Comes with a five year warranty

Full Central Heating And Boiler For FREE

The first time central heating grant is offered to those households that have never had a boiler or radiators in the past. Homes heated by electric, coal or wood or no heating at all will be eligible. An LPG tank can be installed in the gardens of the property above ground and then a boiler to radiators is fitted within the property. There are certain guidelines that have to be met when installing the large LPG tanks in the gardens. There has to be a 3m clearance from any combustible object or barrier e.g. a bush or a shed. So larger gardens and detached hokes usually pass the criteria for this grant. The grant will also allow the first time heating grant to be applied to homes that have mains gas in the property and may use it for cooking but don’t have the central heating system installed. What is the process to getting this granted? Please inquire with one of our team by calling 0333 004 0035 or by completing the online eligibility button at the top of the homepage.

We All Know Heat Rises

Heat rises up and out of your house through the roof. Loft insulation locks in the heat that is given off by the heaters in your home. By simply installing FREE loft insulation in your attic, the difference is noticeable and the temperature change can be felt as soon as the install is complete. The installation process is quick and easy taking all of 2 – 3 hours maximum. Loft insulation is a great place to start if you want to make your home warmer and cheaper to heat. Just think of all that heat that is lost the the atmosphere! This will prevent that. What area the benefits of installing FREE loft insulation?

  • Warmer homes for all
  • A noticeable difference in the temperature within hours of fitting
  • Reduced energy bills from day one
  • Easy and simple to install

What is Room in Roof or Attic Room Insulation?

Put quite simply, it is insulating the sloping ceilings and walls with a 62mm insulation board. The sloping ceilings have wooden beams in them and we fix an insulation board on them by screwing into it. The boards are then plastered over and then they can be decorated again. If you can imagine the heat from your home rising up to the top floor and then escaping out and into the atmosphere. The attic room insulation will prevent the heat being lost into the atmosphere and it will save you money on heating your home. 25% of all heat lost in a home goes up and out through the roof.

Cavity Wall Insulation stores the heat within the inner walls, bouncing it back into the room and holding it for longer. This gives you a more even temperature and gets rid of the draughts that come down from the walls. The cavity is located between the inner and outer brickwork of the property. The main materials used by NIA installers are Mineral Wool (Glass or Rock Wool), EPS Bead (Polystyrene bead) and PU Foam (Polyurethane Foam) Cavity Wall Insulation can lower your heating bills, lower wear and tear on your boiler and reduce global warming and climate change

Some insurance backed guarantees can cover a 25 year guarantee. Savings of up to £680 a year can be felt by installing cavity wall insulation. There is also a 25 year insurance backed guarantee available for PU Foam. The recommended cavity width is 50mm. There are a number of grants and schemes available to home owners which can substantially reduce the cost of installing these product.
